One should not, like rustics who have not been to court or lived among refined and honorable people, relieve oneself without shame or reserve in front of ladies, or before the doors or windows of court chambers or other rooms. Rather, everyone ought at all times and in all places to show himself reasonable, courteous, and respectful in word and gesture.
—From the Wernigerode Court Regulations of 1570, quoted by Norbert Elias in The History of Manners
Fuck civility. The time has come for the dangerous class, the social scum to abandon all pretenses of reasonable, courteous, and respectful words and gestures. The time has come to piss without shame or reserve in front of ladies. They will call us bullies. But we who have been bullied—often in the name of civility—know that civility is bullshit; and as the refined and honorable people among us find it “easier to fixate on incivility than to reckon with whatever ideas rude language might describe,” we are called to be uncivil.
